Diagram of an eye with myopia
Caption
Onset of myopia usually occurs between ages 7-16 years, when developing eyes can start growing too long axially (from front to back). Instead of focusing images on the retina—the light-sensitive tissue in the back of the eye—images of distant objects are focused at a point in front of the retina, which causes people to have good near vision but poor distance vision.
