John T. Burklow
Chief of Staff
John Burklow is Chief of Staff of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Mr. Burklow provides strategic counsel to key leaders within the NIH and creates and maintains cross-departmental relationships within the Department of Health and Human Services. He serves as liaison with a number of stakeholders, helps monitor and manage information flow for the NIH Director, and takes on cross-cutting special projects. As Chief of Staff, Mr. Burklow also oversees the Immediate Office of the NIH Director, the NIH Office of the Executive Secretariat and the NIH Ombudsman’s Office.
Before assuming the position of Chief of Staff, Mr. Burklow served as NIH’s Associate Director for Communications and Public Liaison and Director of the NIH Office of Communications and Public Liaison from 2002–2021. Mr. Burklow has held progressive leadership positions at NIH since joining the National Cancer Institute in 1986.
